NCAA Tournament Weekend

29-March-2009

This weekend I’ve been following the NCAA hockey tournament very closely. The term March Madness may be applied to the basketball tournament, but the hockey tournament has been nearly pandemonium this year.

Scores.

4th seed and 13th ranked Miami took out 1-seed 4th ranked Denver. They then took out the WCHA tournament champion 8th ranked Minnesota-Duluth to get into their first ever frozen 4.

#11 Vermont(3) ousted #5 Yale(2). In a HUGE upset, #18 Air Force took out #3 Michigan. Vermont then took out the USAF to be the next Frozen 4 participant, in double OT.

The #12 University of New Hampshire Wildcats faced #7 North Dakota. UNH was down 5-4 when they scored with 0.1 seconds left (yes, one tenth of a second!) to send it to Overtime. UNH then scored 45 seconds into overtime to win the upsetter! UNH faces Boston U for the next spot in the Frozen 4.

The biggest upset of them all, however, was when Un-ranked Bemidji State completely obliterated second-ranked and last year’s runner-up Notre Dame, 5-1. It was Bemidji State’s first NCAA Tournament win, ever. It was also Bemidji’s first win over a ranked opponent, ever.

The Frozen 4 will be in Washington DC, and given what’s been going on there lately, it may be the best thing to happen in that city all year.
